Boys Soccer
Blueberry Festival Tournament: At Plymouth, Kankakee Valley edged the hosts 2-1 to take the title. The Kougars (5-2) got goals from Michael Hanson and Brady Sampson, with assists by Jacob Hamstra and Liam Ooms. Tyler Luttell turned aside 10 shots.
In the first a game, a 7-2 KV win over East Chicago Central, Hanson fashioned a hat trick. Landon Palfi, Anthony Ruvalcaba, Joel Cazares and Kaleb Toth also found the net. Hanson, Palfi, Ruvalcaba, Ooms and Cazares chipped in helpers. Luttell totalled six saves.
Boone Grove 4, Hebron 0: Nick Ramps, Sebastian Hendzel, Adrian Diaz and William Mazurkiewicz all scored as the Wolves handled the Hawks. Alec Epler and Josh Gillespie picked up assists and Hunter Estes made one save.
Hoosier Cup: At Bloomington, Illiana Christian suffered its first loss, falling 4-2 to Valparaiso. Zach Davids and Grant Terpstra scored for the Vikings (4-1-1). Nolan Flipse assisted on a goal and Eman Calix recorded five saves.
Munster 6, Kankakee Valley 0: Nolan Kinsella erupted for five goals to carry the Mustangs (3-1, 2-0) to the Northwest Crossroads Conference win. Ashton Silva notched Munster's other score, with Samuel Marich and Nikola Dimitrijevic picking up assists. Vuk Maric made two stops to secure the shutout. Tim Stidham had 13 saves for KV (3-2, 0-1).
Illiana Christian 1, Culver Academy 1: Zander Weemhoff scored and Eman Calix recorded six saves as the Vikings (4-0-1) drew with the Eagles.
Illiana Christian 7, Highland 0: Chase Poortinga's hat trick and Nolan Flipse's trio of assists powered the Vikings (4-0) against the Trojans. Flipse, Noah Sons, Grant Terpstra and Josh Carter rounded out the scoring. Sons, Terpstra and Divine Olikagu contributed assists. Eman Calix and Aidan Drost split halves and kept a clean sheet with one save each.
Valparaiso 12, Griffith 0: Isaac Siewen scored four goals and Noah Magiers and Dom Briones each tallied two as the Vikings (4-0) pasted the Panthers (0-5). Noah Barrett assisted on four Valpo goals, while Will Donley notched two goals and set up two others. Ivan Latinovic and Vasilis George each handed out a pair of helpers, with Evan Johnson and Hunter Adams finding the net. Jack Reilly and Jack Luth chipped in assists.
Valparaiso 5, Highland 1: Isaac Siewin's hat trick carried the Vikings pass the Trojans. Noah Magiera and Vasilis George added goals, with Siewin, Manny Liu, Ivan Latinovic and Dominic Briones contributing assists. Jackson Novak made three stops. Damien Castellanos recorded Highland's goal with an assist from Gray Deyoung. Jacob Escobar totalled seven saves.
Kankakee Valley 2, Merrillville 1: Michael Hanson and Levi Herz found the net as the Kougars (3-1) topped the Pirates (1-3). Liam Ooms picked up an assist and Tyler Luttell turned back six shots. Brady Sampson had one save for KV. Jovanni Martinez got Merrillville on the board and Roman Martinez amassed eight saves.
Girls Soccer
Chesterton 1, South Bend Saint Joseph 0: Olivia Virgil curled in a free kick from 25 yards to account for the only scoring as the Trojans edged the Indians. Kori Downs posted a clean sheet in the net.
Highland 3, Boone Grove 0: Madelyn Gore scored twice and Laila Gallardo assisted on two goals as the Trojans (4-1) bested the Wolves. Aries Meza had a goal and Grace Houchin an assist, with Abigail Scheeringa making one save to secure the shutout. Aubrey Wellestat had eight stops for BG.
Munster 2, Lake Central 2: Mia Nisle posted a goal and an assist for the Indians and Maya Maldonado did the same for the Mustangs. Munster's Natalie Kindt stopped nine shots and LC's Olivia Pelot totalled four. Chesterton 2, Valparaiso 2 (Chesterton wins 5-4 in penalty kick shootout): Ella Keane, Emma Skalka, Carmen Stark, Ava Olivencia and Olivia Virgil went 5-for-5 in PKs and Kate Wantuch came up with the decisive save as the Trojans nipped the Vikings. Eva Montes and Adey Avey scored in regulation with assists from Vigil and Emma Skalka.
Lake Central 9, Michigan City 0: Olivia Enyeart racked up five goals as the Indians whipped the Wolves. Ava Gutyan, Danielle Moore, Mia Nisle and Liana Navarro each scored for LC. Olivia Conelly recorded two assists, with Gutyan, Bella Soria, Zoe Panxica, Jiana Church, Nisle, Rylle Walczak and Francesca DeLuca all adding one. Madison Tilden compiled 15 saves for the Wolves.
Kouts 1, Hammond Central 0: Kaylah Jacob scored on an assist by Emily Zengler and Macie Sanders made seven saves as the Fillies edged the Wolves. Aniyah Henry stopped eight shots for Hammond Central.
Boone Grove 2, Victory Christian 1: Freshman Rhi Ramos netted the game-winner for the Wolves in the 78th minute, breaking a 1-1 tie with the Lions. Kenna Johnson opened the scoring for Boone in the eighth minute with a laser from just inside the 18-yard box. VCA leveled the game early in the second half, as both teams battled the wind and each other for the better part of the second 40 minutes.
Boys Tennis
Chesterton 3, Valparaiso 2: Jake Bell and Max Haughtington prevailed 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at two doubles to lift the Trojans past the Vikings. Jai Barath and Payton Belegal took one doubles, 6-3, 6-1, and Luke Sorgic posted a shutout at one singles. Nate Nightingale took a three-setter at two singles for Valpo, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Nick Lustick claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the three spot.
Volleyball
Crown Point 25-25-21-25, Chesterton 21-1-25-14: The Trojans fell in four games despite Tenley Davis' 14 kills and 12 from Luca Bombicano. Marissa Roe registered five kills and five clock kills.
Chesterton 25-25-24-25, Valparaiso 21-17-26-23: Tenely Davis (18 kills, four aces) and
Luca Bombacino (13 kills) powered the Trojans past the Vikings. Marissa Roe (six kills) and Riley Toesseng (five kills) were big at the net with six block kills apiece. Cassie Lange served five aces and claimed a dozen digs.
Girls Golf
Chesterton 191, Highland 244: At Sand Creek, Maddie Soffin's 41 led all golfers for the host Trojans (7-4). Kristin McCoy turned in a 47, while Chris Driscoll, Cori Schultz and Caitlyn Robison (personal best) all carded 51s.
Chesterton 194, La Porte 196, Merrillville 283: At Sand Creek, the Trojans (6-4, 2-3) swept the Duneland Conference triangular, led by Maddie Soffin's 46. Kristin McCoy was one shot back (47), with Cori Schultz (50) and Chris Driscoll (51) also scoring. La Porte's Kamryn Kubik was medalist at 43.
Football
Boone Grove 53, South Bend Clay 6: Mark Rowland threw for 283 yards and five touchdowns while the Wolves defense allowed the Colonials just 78 total yards, while forcing three turnovers. Tyler Torbeson was Rowland's favorite target with five catches for 90 yards and two scores. Chris Gonzalez paced the rushing attack with 100 yards on nine carries and Corey Noonan added a TD for BG (1-1).
Girls Cross Country
Rudy Skorupa Invitational: At Lake Central, Chesterton finished sixth with 143 points. A well-bunched top five included Jessica Martin (25th, 21:15), Ali Sierazy (26th, 21:16). Payton Leady (29th, 21:38), Madison Trumbo (31st, 21:48) and Allison Van Kley (32nd, 21:56).
